Rural Changes

81% of the UK's population lives in urban areas, however this is changing. This is known as counter-urbanization. Here we will discuss the Push, pull, advantages and disadvantages of urban to rural migration.

Push (from Urban to Rural):

  • Urban areas have far more pollution in a sense of both noise and carbon pollution

  • Increase in congestion as urban areas are densely populated leading to an increase in traffic.

  • There is more crime in built up urban areas.

  • Housing prices are far more expensive.

Pull (to rural environment):

  • Perception of a better quality of life in rural areas due to its nature (literally and theoretically). Furthermore there is an overall increase in the ageing population, this influences the decreasing percentage of the UK's population that lives in urban areas due to the older generation shifting to the rural areas for reason discussed below.

  • Housing prices, for what you get in Urban areas, are cheaper. (generally consisting of semi/detached housing. More for your money

  • Less local crime

  • Land is cheaper

  • More nature with parks, greenery and lakes.

  • More employees are moving to rural areas as public and private transport increase in both efficiency and speed.

  • The internet speed is improving

Advantages of Counter Urbanization:

  • For local businesses in both real estate and general goods, more people = more customers. This aids to there profit helping the overall rural economy.

  • For those invested in housing and real estate, there will be an increase in price.

Disadvantages of Counter Urbanization:

  • Due to this increase, businesses have recognized this and are now investing the rural areas with shops. This can be detrimental to local businesses, putting them out of business.

  • For those not invested in real estate and looking to buy houses, the houses will have increased in costs.

  • Due to the past nature of rural living, more people could potentially annoy locals who have lived there for awhile.

  • Schools that are not prepared for this increase will become overcrowded as they were not originally designed for this amount of people and initially couldn't afford to increase in size.

  • slight increase in traffic, accidents and congestion as more people = more cars.

  • potential loss of community spirit as generally everyone knows each other in small towns - i speak from experience!

Greenbelt areas: are areas that are legally protected to develop nature and greenery around urban areas.
